Treat Yourself

Have you ever heard the expression “all work and no play makes one dull”? I believe there is some truth to it. We can’t live and never have fun. Our current restrictions due to COVID-19 have some people going stir crazy. We weren’t created to stay home. After this virus expires and it will, people will look forward to the restrictions easing. However, there will be some permanent mental damage for a few based on studies by doctors who are experts in this area. All work or just being “sheltered in” creates a boring life and as humans we need exciting activities to help us feel alive. Even Jesus attended celebrations and dinners.

Finding ways to have fun and live a vibrant life in Christ should be on our agenda. It should be our duty to explore museums, parks, other countries, and God’s great creations that testify of His Majesty. Those things leave a lasting impression on us and provide a way of escape from the mundane. Hence we should treat ourselves to the joys that life offers us and not feel like we don’t deserve it.

I try to live a healthy lifestyle. I eat right, exercise and participate in non-contact sports. Occasionally, I’ll still pick up a basketball, but it is limited. To treat myself, I do go to Popeye’s for the two piece white meat, spicy chicken with red beans and rice. My patronage is limited usually to once a year. All of that eating right and exercising gets boring after a while and I need some “grease” so I indulge and don’t feel bad about it. In 2020, I plan to visit Burger King to purchase a Whopper, Fries and a Vanilla Milk Shake. Admittedly, I will run an extra mile or two after that meal. However, while I am delighting in the experience, I won’t think about the calories, sugar or carbs. So the next time you see me and I have a big smile on my face, it will probably be because I ate my Whopper and I am still thinking about it. Treat Yourself!!
